What is Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)?

ART is an emerging psychotherapy developed by veteran marriage and family therapist, Laney Rosenzweig. It targets distressing memories and emotions by utilizing features of various evidence-based therapies. Although ART draws from other existing therapeutic approaches, it distinguishes itself from them with its potential for accelerated healing and an emphasis on a resolution of trauma, rather than management of symptoms. ART uses safe and effective methods that are currently being validated by scientific research studies at the University of South Florida.

Accelerated

ART is designed to achieve healing benefits much more rapidly than traditional talk therapy or prolonged exposure therapy. Many people experience relief in only one 60 to 90 minute session. ART is a very specific and direct approach that can achieve rapid recovery from symptoms and reactions that may have been present for many years. ART purposes to go through one single event in a single session and move towards resolution. It is intended to be a short form of therapy that typically consists of 1 to 5 sessions.

Resolution

Some therapeutic techniques and approaches are designed to help individuals tolerate and live with the impact of their traumatic experiences or mental health conditions. ART is different because it has the goal of reprogramming the way the trigger, memory, or circumstances can initiate an emotional and/or physical response within the body. Clients can experience a reduction in symptoms because the goal of ART is to resolve the distressing nature of the event and/or behavior itself.

How does ART work?

The client is always in control of the entire ART session while the therapist guides the process. ART uses relaxing eye movements and a technique called Voluntary Memory / Image Replacement. These both aim to change the way negative images are actually stored in the brain. This is done without talking about the details of the traumatic experience and/or negative images that are associated with what occurred. This can be very helpful for clients who are unable or uncomfortable sharing the details about what they are focusing on during their ART session(s).

Although the past cannot be changed, clients participating in ART get to imagine the changes they wish they could make to previous painful experiences. This fosters empowerment and healing while changing the relationship that clients had with their traumatic narrative before beginning ART.

Is ART the same as EMDR?

Both ART and EMDR harness the healing power of eye movements, but they take different approaches to distressing memories or experiences. EMDR seeks to desensitize a patient to their painful memory by reprocessing it, whereas ART seeks to reprogram the way negative memories and associated images are actually stored in the brain. As creator, Laney Rosenzwieg says, “This therapy replaces negative images with positive images.”  Therapists also use different protocols in ART and EMDR sessions.

Is ART a beneficial treatment option for me?

ART has proven to be effective in treating individuals experiencing many mental health challenges, including:

  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Phobias

  • Panic Attacks

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

  • Substance Use

  • Performance Anxiety

  • Codependency

If you are looking for an alternative to traditional talk therapy, ART may offer a powerful and efficient path forward. Healing does not have to mean reliving every painful detail or spending years revisiting the same memories. Our goal is to provide a safe, compassionate space where you remain in control of your healing process every step of the way. With the right support, it is possible to change the way those experiences live inside you.
